How to Recite the 108 Names
Use a mala (rosary) of 108 beads. Hold the mala in your right hand, beginning at the meru (the large central bead). Chant one name per bead, moving your thumb and middle finger along the strand. Do not cross the meru — when you reach it, reverse direction for the next round.
Best times to recite:
- Wednesday (Budhvaar) — Ganesha’s day
- Ganesh Chaturthi
- Before beginning any new work, exam, or journey
- During the morning brahma muhurta (90 minutes before sunrise)
Light a lamp, offer a flower or modaka sweet, and chant with a steady, sincere mind. One complete recitation (all 108 names) is one paath.
Benefits of the Ashtottara Shatanamavali
Regular chanting of the 108 names of Ganesha removes obstacles at every level — practical, mental, and spiritual. The tradition holds that each name carries a specific shakti (power): names 1–20 remove outer impediments, names 21–60 strengthen wisdom and resolve, and names 61–108 open the path to spiritual liberation. Devotees report clarity of mind, reduction of anxiety, and unexpected doors opening in career and relationships when this practice is kept up consistently.
