What is a Panchang?
A Panchang (Sanskrit: पञ्चाङ्ग — pancha = five, anga = limb) is the Hindu almanac that tracks five key astronomical elements governing each day. Together they describe the quality of time — whether a moment is auspicious for travel, worship, business, or rest.
The five limbs are: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday and its ruling deity), Nakshatra (the lunar mansion the Moon occupies), Yoga (the astrological combination of Sun and Moon), and Karana (the half-day period). Each carries its own character and influences the nature of activities performed within it.
Consulting the Panchang before ceremonies, travel, business ventures, and spiritual practices is a living tradition observed across India and wherever Hindus have made their home. Even a brief awareness of today's Tithi and Nakshatra connects daily life to the rhythms of the cosmos as described in Vedic Jyotisha.
Panchang calculations are approximate. For precise muhurta timings, consult a qualified Jyotishi.
