Jai Ambe Gauri — Durga Aarti — Lyrics, Meaning & Benefits
Jai Ambe Gauri aarti — all 13 verses in Devanagari with simple transliteration and meaning. Complete Durga aarti for Navratri and daily Devi puja.
The Mother of the Universe
Jai Ambe Gauri is the great aarti of the Divine Mother — sung at Durga temples, at Navratri pandals, and in homes where the Goddess is worshipped across all nine nights of Navratri. The aarti praises her many names (Ambe, Gauri, Shyama), her fierce deeds, her compassionate care, and her cosmic sovereignty over creation.
She is both Ambe (the primal mother, from Sanskrit amba = mother) and Gauri (the fair one, the golden one) — these two names together capture the paradox at the heart of Shakti worship: the divine mother is simultaneously nurturing and terrifying, gentle and all-destroying, the source of life and the wielder of the sword.
Verse 1 (Chorus)
जय अम्बे गौरी, मैया जय श्यामा गौरी ।
तुमको निशदिन ध्यावत, हरि ब्रह्मा शिवरी ॥
Jai Ambe Gauri, Maiya Jai Shyama Gauri. Tumko Nishdin Dhavat, Hari Brahma Shivri.
Victory to Ambe Gauri! O Mother, victory to Shyama Gauri! Hari (Vishnu), Brahma, and Shiva meditate on you day and night.

Maang Sindoor Biraajat, Teeko Mrigmad Ko. Ujjwal Se Dou Naina, Chandravadan Neeko.
Sindoor shines in the parting of your hair, and musk marks your forehead. Your two eyes gleam with light, and your moon-like face is beautiful beyond words.

You destroyed Shambhu and Nishambhu, and you slew Mahishasura the buffalo-demon. With smoke-coloured eyes you are intoxicated with divine power day and night.

You destroyed Chanda and Munda, you killed Raktabija (the blood-seed demon). You slew both Madhu and Kaitabha, and made the gods fearless.
These verses recount Durga’s most famous mythological victories — her battles against the great demons described in the Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati). Each demon represents a quality of ignorance and ego that the Goddess destroys within the devotee’s inner life.

When to Sing Jai Ambe Gauri
This aarti is central to Navratri worship — the nine nights dedicated to the Goddess in all her forms. It is sung at:
- Every Navratri evening (both Chaitra and Sharada Navratri)
- Ashtami puja — the eighth night, when the Goddess is worshipped in her most fierce form
- Navami puja — the ninth day, when the Kanya Puja (worshipping young girls as forms of the Goddess) takes place
- At any Shakti temple (Durga, Kali, Ambaji, Vaishno Devi)
- At any puja in which the Goddess is the presiding deity
Light the lamp, wave it before the Goddess, and let the song rise. The Goddess — who destroyed Mahishasura, who shattered the armies of demons, who sustains the universe — is listening.
