Satyanarayan Puja — Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Satyanarayan Puja is a votive ritual (vrata) dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayan — the Lord of Truth. This is one of the most beloved household pujas in Hinduism, performed across India.
When to Perform
- Monthly: Purnima (full moon) — especially auspicious
- Special occasions: Marriage, house warming (griha pravesh), child’s first birthday, academic success, business inauguration
- Ekadashi: 11th day of lunar fortnight
- Thursday: Weekly observance

Step-by-Step Puja Method
Step 1: Preparation
- Fast on the day or eat only once (or skip non-vegetarian food)
- Clean the puja area
- Set up the altar with Vishnu image, kalash, and all samagri
Step 2: Ganesh Puja Always begin by worshipping Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles.
Step 3: Kalash Sthapana Place the kalash (pot) filled with water. Put 5 mango leaves around the rim, place a coconut on top. This kalash is considered the body of Varuna (water god) and is the primary vessel of puja.
Step 4: Invocation of Satyanarayan
“Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” — Chant 3 times
ॐ नमो नारायणाय नमः Om Namo Narayanaya Namah
Step 5: Panchamrit Abhishek Perform the ritual bathing with panchamrit, then clean water, then dress the image in yellow cloth.
Step 6: Shodashopachara Perform all 16 offerings (as in the Lakshmi Puja guide). Key additions for Satyanarayan:
- Tulsi leaves are mandatory in every offering
- Offer banana, sugar, and panchamrit as naivedya
Step 7: Satyanarayan Mantra
ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय सत्यरूपिणे सत्यार्थाय सत्यनिधाय सत्यनाथाय नमः
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya Satyarupine Satyarthaya Satyanidhanaya Satyanathaya Namah
Step 8: Satyanarayan Vrat Katha Read or listen to the five chapters of Satyanarayan Vrat Katha (available in most prayer booklets and online). This is essential to the puja — never skip the Katha.
The Katha has 5 chapters narrating how different people benefited from (or were punished for skipping) the vow.
Step 9: Aarti Perform Vishnu aarti or Satyanarayan aarti:
Om Jai Jagdish hare, Swami Jai Jagdish hare…
Step 10: Prasad Distribution The panchamrit sheera (halwa) is the prasad. Prepare it during or after the puja. Distribute to all present — do not refuse prasad after Satyanarayan Puja.
Panchamrit Sheera (Prasad Recipe)
- Heat ghee in a pan, roast semolina golden
- Add milk slowly, stir constantly
- Add sugar, raisins, cashews
- Mix in mashed banana, honey, cardamom
- Cook until it leaves the sides of the pan
- Offer before the Lord, then distribute
Important Dos and Don’ts
✓ All family members should be present ✓ Distribute prasad to neighbors ✓ Listen to the Katha attentively ✗ Do not leave puja midway ✗ Do not disrespect the prasad — never refuse or waste it ✗ Do not perform on a day of family impurity (recent death/birth)
