In the Hindu tradition, naming a child is a sacred ritual called Namkaran (नामकरण), meaning "making of the name." It is typically performed on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, though families sometimes observe it on the twenty-first day or at the first month. The ceremony is one of the sixteen samskaras — the sacred rites of passage that mark the milestones of a Hindu life.

Central to the Namkaran ceremony is the role of the jyotishi (Vedic astrologer). Using the exact time, date, and place of the child's birth, the jyotishi calculates the child's janma nakshatra — the lunar mansion (nakshatra) in which the Moon was placed at the moment of birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras corresponds to a set of syllables, and tradition holds that the child's name should begin with one of these syllables. This ensures the name resonates harmoniously with the child's cosmic blueprint.

The significance goes deeper than sound. In the Vedic worldview, a name is the child's first mantra — a sacred vibration that will be spoken thousands of times throughout their life. Every time the name is uttered with love or called across a room, that sound ripples through the child's consciousness. Choosing a name associated with a divine quality — courage (Veer), peace (Shanti), wisdom (Gyan) — is believed to draw that quality into the child's life through constant repetition.

The ceremony itself involves a havan (sacred fire), prayers to the family deity, and the formal whispering of the name into the baby's right ear by the father or the priest. The name is then announced to the assembled family. Sweets are distributed, blessings are offered, and the child enters the world with a name chosen not by fashion, but by the stars.
