Commentary
This verse moves from the celestial bodies to the domains of knowledge, divinity, perception, and life itself. Each example follows the same principle: Krishna is the most prominent or essential element in each category.
Among the four Vedas — Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva — Krishna is the Sama Veda. The Sama Veda is distinguished by its musical nature; its hymns are meant to be sung. Among the Vedas, it is considered the most beautiful because it combines sacred knowledge with melody. This reflects the principle that Krishna represents whatever is most excellent, most attractive, most sublime in any category.
Among the gods, He is Vasava — Indra, the king of heaven. Indra rules the celestial realm and is the chief among the demigods, the one they look to for leadership and protection.
Among the senses, He is the mind. This is profound. The mind is not merely one of the senses — it is the coordinator and master of all the senses. Without the mind, the eyes see but do not perceive, the ears hear but do not understand. The mind gives meaning to all sensory experience. Krishna is that integrating, central faculty.
And finally, among living beings He is chetanaa — consciousness itself. This is the deepest identification in this verse. Matter is inert; what distinguishes a living being from dead matter is consciousness. That consciousness, says Krishna, is His manifestation. Wherever there is awareness, wherever there is the spark of life, there is the presence of the Divine.
