Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 7
Jnana Vijnana Yoga
The Supreme Lord said: Now hear, O son of Pritha, how by practicing yoga with your mind attached to Me and taking complete refuge in Me, you shall know Me fully, without any doubt.
I shall now declare to you in full this knowledge together with direct realization, knowing which nothing further remains to be known in this world.
Among thousands of human beings, scarcely one strives for perfection; and among those who have achieved perfection, scarcely one knows Me in truth.
Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence, and false ego — altogether these eight constitute My separated material energies.
Besides this inferior nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, know that there is My superior energy, which comprises the living entities who are sustaining this entire material world.
Know that all living beings have their source in these two natures. I am the origin of the entire universe as well as the dissolution into which everything merges.
O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.
O son of Kunti, I am the taste of water, the light of the sun and moon, the sacred syllable Om in the Vedas, sound in ether, and ability in human beings.
I am the original fragrance of the earth, the heat in fire, the life of all that lives, and the austerity of all ascetics.
O son of Pritha, know that I am the eternal seed of all living beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent and the splendor of the splendid.
I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. O best of the Bharatas, I am sex life that is not contrary to dharma.
Know that all states of being — whether in goodness, passion, or ignorance — come from Me alone. I am not in them; they are in Me.
Deluded by the three modes of material nature — goodness, passion, and ignorance — the entire world does not know Me, who am transcendental to them and inexhaustible.
This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.
Those who are foolish, who are the lowest of mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the demonic nature — such miscreants do not surrender unto Me.
O Arjuna, four kinds of pious men worship Me — the distressed, the seeker of wealth, the inquisitive, and the wise, O best of the Bharatas.
Of these, the wise one who is constantly engaged in pure, single-pointed devotion is the best. I am very dear to him, and he is very dear to Me.
All these devotees are undoubtedly noble souls, but I consider the wise one to be as My very self. Being fixed in devotion, he is established in Me alone as the supreme goal.
After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.
Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender to lesser gods, following particular rules and rites according to their own natures.
I am in everyone's heart as the Supersoul. As soon as one desires to worship some deity with faith, I make that very faith steady and unwavering.
Endowed with that faith, he worships that particular deity and obtains his desires. But in truth, these benefits are bestowed by Me alone.
Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to them; My devotees come to Me.
Unintelligent men think I was impersonal before and have now assumed this personality. They do not know My supreme, imperishable, transcendental nature.
I am not manifest to everyone, being veiled by My internal potency yoga-maya. This deluded world does not know Me as the unborn and imperishable.
O Arjuna, as the Supreme Lord I know everything — all that has passed, all that is happening now, and all that is yet to come. I know all living beings, but no one truly knows Me.
O Bharata, O scorcher of foes, all beings are born into delusion — overcome by the dualities of desire and hatred arising from illusion.
Those persons who have acted piously in previous and present lives, whose sinful reactions are completely eradicated, are freed from the delusion of dualities and worship Me with determination.
Those who strive for liberation from old age and death, taking refuge in Me, know Brahman completely, along with the self in its entirety and all the principles of action.
Those who know Me as the governing principle of material manifestation, of the demigods, and of all methods of sacrifice can, with steadfast mind, understand and know Me even at the time of death.
