Commentary

This verse clearly maps the destinations resulting from the three modes. It is a summary statement that connects the qualities of each mode with their cosmic consequences.

Those situated in the mode of goodness (sattvasthaa) go upward (oordhvam gachchhanti) to the higher planets. Depending on the degree of goodness developed, one may be elevated to various heavenly planets — the Svarga-loka, Satya-loka, or even Brahmaloka, where the principal personality of this universe, Lord Brahma, resides. The quality of life in these realms is incomparably superior to earthly existence.

Those in the mode of passion (raajasaah) remain in the middle (madhye tishthanti) — on this earthly plane. The passionate person is neither elevated to higher realms nor degraded to lower ones. They continue the cycle of human birth, driven by desire and ambition, experiencing a mixture of happiness and distress. But rajoguna is inherently unstable; one can easily slip into tamas and thereby fall lower.

Those in the mode of ignorance (taamasaah) go downward (adho gachchhanti) to the lower realms. The word jaghanya (abominable) emphasizes that tamas is the most degraded of the three modes. Those who cultivate it progressively sink into lower and lower forms of existence. For the devotees in Krishna consciousness, however, the goal is to transcend all three modes entirely and attain the supreme abode, which is beyond the material cosmos altogether.
