Commentary

This verse describes the result of understanding the truth presented in this chapter. One who knows Krishna as Purushottama — the Supreme Person beyond both the fallible and the infallible — becomes sarvavit, the knower of everything. And such a person naturally engages in wholehearted devotion (sarvabhaavena bhajati maam).

The word asammoodha (without doubt, unbewildered) is key. There are many philosophical views about the nature of God, the soul, and reality. Some say God is impersonal. Some say God and the soul are identical. Some say there is no God at all. Krishna says: the one who is free from all such confusion and knows Me directly as the Supreme Person — that person has understood everything worth understanding.

The phrase sa sarvavit — “he knows everything” — is a remarkable claim. It does not mean that such a devotee knows every scientific fact or historical detail. It means he has grasped the essential truth from which all other truths derive their meaning. Knowing the root, one knows the tree. Knowing the Supreme Person, one understands the purpose of creation, the nature of the soul, the mechanism of karma, and the path to liberation.

Such understanding is not passive. It naturally results in bhajati — devotional service. The word bhajati implies an active, loving, personal engagement with the Divine. And sarvabhaavena means with one’s entire being — not partially, not occasionally, but with complete surrender of body, mind, heart, and soul.

This is the Gita’s ultimate vision: knowledge and devotion are not separate paths but one integrated reality. True knowledge of Krishna as Purushottama naturally flows into complete devotion, and complete devotion naturally deepens into perfect knowledge.
