Commentary

This verse describes the inevitable outcome of the demonic path. Aneka-chitta-vibhrantah — the mind is torn in many directions, confused and scattered. Unlike the focused, steady mind that yoga cultivates, the demonic mind is pulled by a hundred competing desires, none of which brings satisfaction.

Moha-jala-samavritah — they are surrounded by a net of delusion. The image of jala — a net — is powerful. Like a fish caught in a net, the demonic person cannot see the way out. Every movement entangles them further. The net is made of their own false beliefs, their attachments, their identification with wealth and status.

Prasakta kama-bhogeshhu — they are addicted to sense pleasure. The word prasakta means deeply attached, unable to let go. This is not casual enjoyment but compulsive consumption — the kind that controls the person rather than being controlled by them.

The result: patanti narake ashuchau — they fall into an impure hell. In the Gita’s framework, hell is not merely a post-mortem destination. It is a state of being — the state of being trapped in endless craving, endless anxiety, endless dissatisfaction. The demonic person is already living in a kind of hell, even while surrounded by luxury. Their outer wealth cannot compensate for their inner poverty.
