Commentary

Having stated that duties are divided by the gunas, Krishna now enumerates the specific qualities of each varna, beginning with the brahmana. These are not imposed rules but natural expressions (svabhaavajam) of a sattva-dominated nature.

Shamah — peacefulness, tranquility of mind. Damah — control of the senses. Tapah — austerity, the willingness to undergo voluntary hardship for spiritual growth. Shaucham — purity, both external cleanliness and internal integrity. Kshaantih — tolerance and patience, the ability to forgive and endure. Aarjavam — simplicity and straightforwardness in dealing with others.

Then come the intellectual qualities: jnaanam — knowledge of scripture and the soul; vijnaanam — realized, practical wisdom that comes from direct experience, not mere bookishness; and aastikyam — faith in God, the scriptures, and the spiritual path.

These nine qualities are not a checklist for social status. They are the natural flowering of a sattvic temperament. A true brahmana is one in whom these qualities arise spontaneously from their inner nature. The purpose of listing them is not to create pride in those who possess them, but to help every person understand their own nature and offer their specific gifts in the service of the whole.
