Commentary

This verse is a pivotal statement in the Gita’s teaching on karma yoga. Krishna declares that perfection — samsiddhi — is available to every person, regardless of their station, provided they are devoted to their own natural work. The path to the highest attainment is not through abandoning one’s duties but through wholehearted engagement with them.

The repetition of sve sve (“each in their own”) emphasizes individuality. The path is not one-size-fits-all. What is right for the brahmana is not right for the kshatriya, and vice versa. Perfection comes not from the type of work performed but from the spirit in which it is performed — with devotion, selflessness, and surrender to the Divine.

Krishna then says tach-chhrinu — “hear that” — indicating that He is about to reveal the method by which this perfection through duty is achieved. This creates anticipation for the next verse, where He will explain that the key is to worship the all-pervading Lord through one’s own work.

This teaching is profoundly democratic in its spiritual implication. No one is excluded from the highest attainment. The farmer in his field, the merchant in his shop, the servant in his labor — all can reach the same spiritual perfection as the sage in his meditation, provided they offer their work as worship. This is the essence of karma yoga: the transformation of ordinary action into a path of liberation.
