Commentary

Bhagavad Gita 18:71 extends the blessing even further. If studying the Gita is worship (18:70), then even simply listening to it with faith brings liberation and elevation to auspicious realms.

Two Qualifications: Shraddha and Anasooya

Only two things are required of the listener:

  1. Shraddha — faith. Not blind belief, but an open and trusting disposition toward the teaching. A willingness to receive rather than resist.

  2. Anasooya — freedom from envy. One who does not bear malice toward Krishna, toward the teaching, or toward those who teach it. Envy closes the heart; its absence opens it.

Even Listening Is Enough

The verse says shrinuyaat api — “even if one merely listens.” This is remarkable. Krishna acknowledges that not everyone can study deeply, not everyone can teach, not everyone can practice advanced yoga. But everyone can listen. And if that listening is accompanied by faith and goodwill, it is enough to transform one’s destiny.

Shubhaan Lokaan Punya-Karmanaam

The listener attains shubhaan lokaan — auspicious worlds — where those of punya-karma (meritorious deeds) reside. In the Vedic cosmology, these are elevated realms of spiritual light and joy. The faithful listener of the Gita, even without elaborate practice, is elevated by the sheer merit of receiving divine wisdom with an open heart.

This verse is the Gita’s most inclusive promise. It brings within the circle of grace everyone who simply listens with sincerity — regardless of learning, status, or spiritual advancement.
