Commentary
If verse 2:47 explains what to do (act without attachment to fruits), verse 2:48 explains how to do it: through Samatvam — equanimity, the state of even-mindedness in the face of all outcomes.
The Definition of Yoga
Here Krishna gives us one of the Gita’s clearest definitions: Yoga is equanimity (samatvaṃ yoga ucyate). Not just physical postures. Not just breathing exercises. Yoga, at its essence, is the capacity to remain steady and balanced regardless of whether your actions result in success or failure.
Yoga-Stha — Established in Yoga
The compound yoga-sthaḥ means “standing firm in yoga” — acting from a center of inner stability rather than being pulled by the turbulent waves of desire and aversion.
When you are yoga-stha:
- Success does not inflate your ego
- Failure does not shatter your resolve
- Action flows from your deepest wisdom, not from reactive emotion
The Two Outcomes: Siddhi and Asiddhi
Siddhi (success, accomplishment) and asiddhi (failure, non-accomplishment) are the two inevitable poles of any action. Krishna does not ask us to become indifferent to quality or to stop caring — he asks us to become equal in the face of outcomes.
This is the Yoga of the Bhagavad Gita: engaged, disciplined, wholehearted action performed from a state of inner freedom.
