Commentary
After describing the supreme glory of devotional knowledge in the previous two verses, Krishna now states the consequence for those who reject it. This is not a threat — it is a statement of spiritual physics. Those without faith in this path simply do not reach the destination. They remain in the cycle of birth and death.
The Role of Shraddha — Faith
Faith (shraddha) is the essential foundation for spiritual progress. Without it, even hearing Vedic evidence from great authorities does not produce conviction. Such faithless persons waver, never becoming firmly established in devotional service. In the Chaitanya Charitamrita, it is said that true faith means the complete trust that by serving the Supreme Lord alone, all perfection can be attained. This is genuine shraddha.
The Shrimad Bhagavatam (4.31.14) illustrates this with a beautiful analogy: just as watering the root of a tree nourishes all its branches, and feeding the stomach satisfies all the senses, serving the Supreme Lord automatically satisfies all other deities and all other obligations. After reading the Gita, one should come to this conclusion — that all other work should be abandoned in favor of devotional service to Krishna. If one’s life philosophy is thus established, that is true faith.
Three Categories of Devotees
Krishna consciousness practitioners can be grouped into three categories. The first category consists of those who are well-versed in devotional literature, have firm faith, and have attained the stage of deep conviction — these are first-class devotees. The second category comprises those who may lack deep scriptural knowledge but nonetheless firmly believe that Krishna bhakti is the supreme path. The third category includes those who believe Krishna’s devotion is excellent but lack comprehensive scriptural understanding, and thus sometimes waver between karma yoga and jnana yoga. For all three, faith is the essential ingredient that sustains progress.
Mrityu-Samsaara-Vartmani — The Path of Death
The phrase mrityu-samsaara-vartmani — the path of death and material existence — is stark. Without faith in devotion, one does not reach Krishna. The cycle of repeated birth and death continues. This is the natural consequence, not a punishment but a result of the soul’s own choices.
