Commentary

Having assessed the two armies, Duryodhana now issues a direct military command. All the great warriors of the Kaurava side — the heroes he named just moments before — are to take their assigned positions throughout the battle formation and, from wherever they stand, ensure that Bhishma is protected. This is not a suggestion but an order, and it reveals something important about Duryodhana’s mind.

Despite his earlier boast that his army was unlimited and unconquerable under Bhishma’s command, Duryodhana is already worried about Bhishma’s safety. This is not irrational — Bhishma was old, and his very power made him a prime target. The Pandavas would know that felling Bhishma would shatter Kaurava morale. Duryodhana’s anxiety here is the anxiety of a man who has staked everything on one pillar and fears that pillar may fall.

The phrase yathaabhaagam — each according to his position — is a model of ancient military discipline. Every warrior was placed at a specific point in the vyuha (battle array), responsible for a particular sector. Duryodhana is reminding them that individual glory must be secondary to the protection of the supreme commander. This is a lesson in collective strategy: even the greatest among you must subordinate personal ambition to the larger mission.

There is a poignant irony embedded in this command. Bhishma himself had told Duryodhana that he would fight, but would never kill the Pandavas — for he loved them dearly. Duryodhana knew this limitation and accepted it. Yet here he is, asking his entire army to rally around a man whose loyalty, however genuine, came with conditions. The whole enterprise of the Kaurava war effort rested on a foundation that was already cracked.

Spiritually, this verse invites reflection on what we protect at all costs in our inner lives. Like Bhishma — honored, revered, powerful — there are beliefs, attachments, and ego-structures that we guard fiercely, deploying all our psychological resources to keep them safe. The Gita, as it unfolds, will ask us to examine whether what we are protecting deserves that protection.
