अभयं सत्त्वसंशुद्धिर्ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः |

Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadiness in knowledge and yoga, giving in charity, control of the senses, worship, study of scriptures, austerity, and straightforwardness —

तेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता |

Radiance, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, freedom from malice, and absence of excessive pride — these are the qualities of one born to divine nature, O Arjuna.

Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness, and ignorance — these are the qualities of one born to the demonic nature, O Partha.

प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः |

Those who are demonic do not know what is to be done and what is to be avoided. Neither purity, nor proper conduct, nor truth is found in them.

असत्यमप्रतिष्ठं ते जगदाहुरनीश्वरम् |

They say that this world is unreal, without foundation, without a God. It is produced by mutual union alone, caused by nothing other than desire.

एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धयः |

Holding such views, these lost souls of meager intelligence engage in cruel and harmful actions, arising as enemies for the destruction of the world.

Taking shelter of insatiable desire, absorbed in hypocrisy, false prestige, and pride, deluded beings accept impermanent things and engage in impure activities.

They are beset by immeasurable anxieties that end only with death, considering sense gratification as the highest aim of life, and convinced that this is all there is.

Bound by hundreds of ties of desire, devoted to lust and anger, they strive to accumulate wealth by unjust means for the sake of sense gratification.

इदमद्य मया लब्धमिमं प्राप्स्ये मनोरथम् |

The demonic person thinks: 'Today I have gained this; tomorrow I shall fulfill this desire. This wealth is mine, and more shall be mine in the future.'

असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि |

'That enemy has been slain by me, and I shall destroy others as well. I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am perfect, powerful, and happy.'

आढ्योऽभिजनवानस्मि कोऽन्योऽस्ति सदृशो मया |

'I am wealthy and of noble birth. Who else is equal to me? I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give in charity, and I shall rejoice.' Thus they are deluded by ignorance.

Bewildered by many anxieties and caught in a net of delusion, addicted to sense gratification, they fall into an impure hell.

Self-conceited, stubborn, and intoxicated by wealth and false prestige, they perform sacrifices in name only, out of pride, without following any scriptural rules.

अहङ्कारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः |

Taking shelter of false ego, strength, arrogance, desire, and anger, the demonic person becomes envious of God situated in their own body and in the bodies of others, and blasphemes the true religion.

तानहं द्विषतः क्रूरान्संसारेषु नराधमान् |

Those who are envious, cruel, and the lowest of mankind — I perpetually cast these hateful and inauspicious souls into demonic wombs in the cycle of birth and death.

आसुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनिजन्मनि |

O son of Kunti, birth after birth these foolish souls attain demonic wombs, and without ever reaching Me, they sink to the lowest condition.

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः |

There are three gates to hell, leading to the destruction of the self — lust, anger, and greed. Therefore, one should abandon all three.

एतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः |

O son of Kunti, a person who is freed from these three gates of darkness acts for the welfare of the self, and thus attains the supreme destination.

यः शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य वर्तते कामकारतः |

One who discards the injunctions of scripture and acts according to one's own desires attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.

तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ |

Therefore, let scripture be your authority in determining what should and should not be done. Understanding the scriptural injunctions, you should perform your duty in this world.
