श्रीभगवानुवाच |
The Supreme Lord said: My dear Arjuna, because you are never envious of Me, I shall impart to you this most confidential knowledge and realization, knowing which you shall be freed from the miseries of material existence.
राजविद्या राजगुह्यं पवित्रमिदमुत्तमम् |
This knowledge is the king of all learning, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest, and because it gives direct perception of the self through realization, it is the perfection of dharma. It is imperishable, and it is joyfully performed.
अश्रद्दधानाः पुरुषा धर्मस्यास्य परन्तप |
O Parantapa, those who have no faith in this dharma do not attain Me. They return to the path of birth and death in this material world.
मया ततमिदं सर्वं जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना |
This entire universe is pervaded by Me in My unmanifest form. All beings rest in Me, but I do not rest in them.
न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् |
And yet everything that is created does not rest in Me. Behold My mystic opulence! Although I am the maintainer of all beings and although I am everywhere, I am not part of this cosmic manifestation — for My Self is the very source of creation.
यथाकाशस्थितो नित्यं वायुः सर्वत्रगो महान् |
Just as the mighty wind, blowing everywhere, always rests in the sky, so understand that all created beings rest in Me.
सर्वभूतानि कौन्तेय प्रकृतिं यान्ति मामिकाम् |
O son of Kunti, at the end of the cosmic cycle all beings enter into My material nature, and at the beginning of the next cycle, by My potency, I create them again.
प्रकृतिं स्वामवष्टभ्य विसृजामि पुनः पुनः |
Taking hold of My own material nature, I create again and again the entire multitude of beings, who are helpless, being under the control of material nature.
न च मां तानि कर्माणि निबध्नन्ति धनञ्जय |
O Dhananjaya, all these actions do not bind Me. I remain seated as if neutral, unattached to these material activities.
मयाध्यक्षेण प्रकृतिः सूयते सचराचरम् |
O son of Kunti, this material nature, working under My supervision, produces all moving and non-moving beings. Under its rule this manifestation is created and annihilated again and again.
अवजानन्ति मां मूढा मानुषीं तनुमाश्रितम् |
Fools deride Me when I descend in human form. They do not know My transcendent nature as the supreme master of all that exists.
मोघाशा मोघकर्माणो मोघज्ञाना विचेतसः |
Those who are thus bewildered are attracted to demonic and atheistic views. In that deluded condition, their hopes for liberation, their fruitive activities, and their pursuit of knowledge are all futile.
महात्मानस्तु मां पार्थ दैवीं प्रकृतिमाश्रिताः |
But the great souls, O Partha, who take shelter of the divine nature, worship Me with undivided minds, knowing Me as the imperishable origin of all beings.
सततं कीर्तयन्तो मां यतन्तश्च दृढव्रताः |
Always glorifying Me, striving with great determination, bowing down before Me with devotion, they worship Me, ever united in devotion.
ज्ञानयज्ञेन चाप्यन्ये यजन्तो मामुपासते |
Others worship Me through the sacrifice of knowledge — some seeing Me as one with them, others as separate, and still others worship My universal form in various ways.
अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञः स्वधाहमहमौषधम् |
I am the Vedic ritual, I am the sacrifice, I am the oblation to the ancestors, I am the healing herb, I am the sacred chant, I am the ghee, I am the fire, and I am the act of offering.
पिताहमस्य जगतो माता धाता पितामहः |
I am the father of this universe, the mother, the sustainer, and the grandfather. I am the object of knowledge, the purifier, the syllable Om, and also the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas.
गतिर्भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी निवासः शरणं सुहृत् |
I am the goal, the sustainer, the master, the witness, the abode, the refuge, and the dearest friend. I am the creation, the dissolution, the foundation, the resting place, and the imperishable seed.
तपाम्यहमहं वर्षं निगृह्णाम्युत्सृजामि च |
O Arjuna, I give heat, I withhold and send forth the rain. I am immortality and also death, I am both being and non-being.
त्रैविद्या मां सोमपाः पूतपापा
Those who study the three Vedas and drink the soma juice, purified of sins, worship Me through sacrifices and pray for passage to heaven. They reach the holy world of Indra and enjoy the celestial pleasures of the gods.
ते तं भुक्त्वा स्वर्गलोक विशालं
Having enjoyed the vast heavenly world, when their merit is exhausted, they return to this mortal world. Thus, those who follow the Vedic principles seeking sense enjoyment achieve only the cycle of coming and going.
अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते |
For those who worship Me with devotion, meditating on My transcendental form, I carry what they lack and preserve what they have.
येऽप्यन्यदेवताभक्ता यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः |
O son of Kunti, even those who are devotees of other gods and worship them with faith, they too worship Me alone, but by the wrong method.
अहं हि सर्वयज्ञानां भोक्ता च प्रभुरेव च |
I am the only enjoyer and the only Lord of all sacrifices. But those who do not recognize My true divine nature fall down from their position.
यान्ति देवव्रता देवान्पितॄन्यान्ति पितृव्रताः |
Worshippers of the devas go to the devas. Worshippers of the ancestors go to the ancestors. Worshippers of ghosts and spirits go to them. But those who worship Me come to Me.
पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति |
If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water, I will accept it.
यत्करोषि यदश्नासि यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत् |
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give, whatever austerity you perform — do that as an offering to Me.
शुभाशुभफलैरेवं मोक्ष्यसे कर्मबन्धनैः |
In this way you shall be freed from the bondage of actions and their auspicious and inauspicious results. With your mind fixed on Me through this yoga of renunciation, you shall be liberated and come to Me.
समोऽहं सर्वभूतेषु न मे द्वेष्योऽस्ति न प्रियः |
I am equal to all living beings. No one is hateful to Me, nor is anyone especially dear. But those who worship Me with devotion are in Me, and I am also in them.
अपि चेत्सुदुराचारो भजते मामनन्यभाक् |
Even if a man of very evil conduct worships Me with undivided devotion, he should be considered saintly, for he is rightly resolved in his determination.
क्षिप्रं भवति धर्मात्मा शश्वच्छान्तिं निगच्छति |
He quickly becomes righteous and attains eternal peace. O son of Kunti, declare boldly that My devotee never perishes.
मां हि पार्थ व्यपाश्रित्य येऽपि स्युः पापयोनयः |
O Partha, those who take shelter in Me, though they be of sinful birth — women, vaishyas, and shudras — even they attain the supreme destination.
किं पुनर्ब्राह्मणाः पुण्या भक्ता राजर्षयस्तथा |
How much more then the righteous brahmanas, the devoted royal sages! Having come to this impermanent and joyless world, engage yourself in loving devotion to Me.
मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु |
Fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, worship Me, bow down to Me. So shall you come to Me. I promise you truly, for you are dear to Me.
