Commentary

Two words carry the entire weight of this verse: Paartha and pashya — O son of Pritha, behold. Krishna says almost nothing here. He does not explain, interpret, or warn. He simply says: look.

The name Partha — son of Pritha — is one of Krishna’s most tender names for Arjuna. Pritha is Kunti, Arjuna’s mother, who gave him up as an infant and who loved him with a fierce, sacrificial love. To call Arjuna by his mother’s name at this moment is to remind him of where he comes from — of the love that made him, of the human roots beneath the warrior’s armour.

And then: behold the Kurus. Not “your enemies.” Not “those you must fight.” Just — the Kurus. As if Krishna is simply presenting reality to Arjuna without filter or framing. Here they are. All of them. Look.

This is placed conspicuously in front of Bhishma and Drona — the two figures who will most undo Arjuna in the verses that follow. Bhishma, his beloved grand-uncle who taught him with his own hands, who bounced him on his knee. Drona, his guru, the man who made him the finest archer in the world. Their names appear first in the list because they will be first in Arjuna’s breaking heart.

Krishna’s short command — pashya — is the hinge of the Bhagavad Gita. Everything before it is preparation. Everything after it is consequence. In this one syllable, the door opens.
