Commentary

Commentary

This verse concisely maps the products of each mode. It serves as both a diagnostic tool and a warning, enabling the sincere seeker to identify which mode is currently dominant in their life.

From the mode of goodness (sattva), real knowledge (jnaanam) develops. When a person is situated in goodness, they can see things as they actually are. They develop discrimination, clarity, and wisdom. Through Krishna consciousness and the study of scripture in the association of devotees, the mode of goodness is cultivated, and from it genuine spiritual understanding arises.

From the mode of passion (rajas), greed (lobha) develops. The passionate person is never satisfied with what they possess. No matter how much wealth, power, or sensory pleasure they accumulate, the desire for more only intensifies. This insatiable greed drives the cycle of endless labor, anxiety, and frustration that characterizes rajasic life.

From the mode of ignorance (tamas) arise madness (pramaada), delusion (moha), and nescience (ajnaanam). The tamasic person cannot distinguish right from wrong. They develop no ability for careful analysis, act impulsively or not at all, and remain stubbornly attached to habits that degrade consciousness. This teaching underscores the urgent need to cultivate sattva as a stepping stone and ultimately transcend all three modes through devotional service to the Supreme Lord.
