Commentary

Commentary

With this verse, Krishna concludes the fifteenth chapter by declaring its contents to be guhyatamam shaastram — the most confidential portion of all Vedic scripture. This is not an ordinary claim. Throughout the Gita, Krishna has described certain teachings as confidential (guhya), more confidential (guhyatara), and now most confidential (guhyatama). The teaching of this chapter — that Krishna is the Supreme Person, Purushottama, beyond both the fallible and infallible beings — represents the highest truth.

Krishna addresses Arjuna as anagha — “O sinless one.” This is significant because the qualification to receive this most confidential knowledge is purity of heart. Only one who is free from the contamination of sinful activities can truly grasp the identity of the Supreme Person. Until a person’s heart is cleansed through devotion and righteous living, the deepest truths of the Vedas remain hidden.

The promise is remarkable: etad buddhvaa buddhimaan syaat — whoever understands this teaching becomes truly intelligent. All other forms of intelligence — scientific, philosophical, artistic, commercial — are partial and relative. But the intelligence that comes from understanding Krishna as the Supreme Person is complete and absolute. Such a person is krita-krityah — one whose duties and endeavors are perfectly fulfilled.

This does not mean that all worldly tasks are automatically accomplished. It means that the essential purpose of human life — self-realization and God-realization — is achieved. The Vedantic tradition holds that there are three stages of attainment: knowing Brahman through the Vedas, realizing one’s relationship with Brahman through practice, and finally reaching Brahman through complete devotion. One who understands the teaching of this chapter has accomplished all three.

Thus ends the fifteenth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, entitled Purushottama Yoga — the Yoga of the Supreme Person.
