Commentary

Commentary

Krishna begins the threefold classification of knowledge with the highest type — sattvic knowledge. This is the knowledge by which one perceives the single, imperishable spiritual reality (eka bhava avyaya) within all living beings, despite the apparent diversity of bodies and forms.

Every living entity — whether a god, a human, an animal, a bird, or a plant — has the same spiritual essence: the eternal soul (atma). Though bodies differ vastly due to past karma, and though living beings appear to be divided into countless species and individual forms, the life force within each is one and the same. It is an expansion of the Supreme Lord’s energy, imperishable and undivided.

As described in the seventh chapter, the Lord’s para prakriti (superior energy) is the source of the living force in every body. Each body maintains its life because of this spiritual energy. To see this life force as one and the same in every being — to recognize the underlying spiritual unity beneath the diversity of material forms — is sattvic knowledge.

This is the first step in genuine spiritual realization. The differences between bodies are real on the material level — different shapes, different abilities, different lifespans. But the knower in sattva sees through these differences to the unchanging spiritual reality within. This vision of unity is the foundation of genuine compassion, respect for all life, and ultimately self-realization.
