Commentary

Commentary

Having described the three types of knowledge, Krishna now turns to the three types of action. Sattvic action — action in goodness — is described first as the ideal.

The key qualities of sattvic action are four: it is niyatam (regulated, prescribed by scripture and duty), sanga-rahitam (free from attachment to the sense of ownership), done araaga-dveshatah (without being driven by personal love or hatred), and performed by one who is aphala-prepsunaa (not desiring the fruits).

This does not mean acting robotically or without feeling. It means performing one’s duty because it is right, not because of what one hopes to gain or fears to lose. A doctor who treats patients with full dedication because it is the right thing to do, regardless of whether the patient is rich or poor, friend or stranger — that is sattvic action.

In Krishna consciousness, sattvic action is duty performed as an offering to the Lord, without the sense of personal ownership or entitlement to results. Such action purifies the heart and leads to liberation. It is the practical expression of the knowledge described in verse 20 — seeing unity beneath diversity, and acting from that vision rather than from ego.
