Commentary
Commentary
Krishna completes His description of the four varnas by outlining the natural occupations of the vaishya and shudra classes. This is not a prescription of social hierarchy but a description of natural tendencies and the kind of work that flows from different combinations of the three gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas).
The vaishya’s duties — krishi (agriculture), go-rakshya (cow protection), and vaanijyam (trade) — revolve around productivity, economic sustenance, and the maintenance of material prosperity. These are the people whose natural inclination is toward creating, growing, and exchanging the resources upon which society depends.
The shudra’s duty is described as paricharyaatmakam karma — work that consists of service. This refers to those whose natural satisfaction comes from assisting and supporting others in their work. In the Vedic understanding, no occupation is inherently superior or inferior — what matters is whether a person is working in harmony with their natural inclinations and offering that work to the Supreme.
The key word in both this and the preceding verses is svabhaavajam — “born of one’s own nature.” Krishna is not imposing duties from outside; He is describing what naturally arises from within. When a person works according to their genuine nature, work becomes effortless and joyful. When they try to imitate another’s nature, the result is internal conflict and poor performance. This principle remains relevant in any era: find the work that matches your inner nature, and perform it as an offering to the Divine.
