Commentary
This verse makes one of the Gita’s most definitive statements about the supremacy of bhakti: bhaktyaa maam abhijaanaati — only through devotion can the Supreme Lord be known as He truly is. Not through speculation, not through intellectual analysis, not through yogic powers — but through pure, selfless devotion.
Krishna cannot be known through mental speculation or scholarly analysis. As stated in the Bhagavad Gita (7.25): naham prakashah sarvasya — “I am not manifest to everyone.” Only through pure devotion can the Lord be understood. One cannot reach Krishna merely through learning, academic study, or philosophical discourse. Only the person who is absorbed in Krishna consciousness and pure devotion truly comprehends Him.
The word tattvatah appears twice — “in truth” or “in reality.” There is a vast difference between knowing about God and knowing God. Academic knowledge of theology, however sophisticated, does not constitute tattva-jnana — knowledge of the reality. That knowledge comes only through the intimacy of devotional love.
And what happens when one truly knows Krishna? Vishate tad-anantaram — one enters into Him immediately. This does not mean losing one’s individuality by merging into a formless void. The word vishate means entering into the Lord’s association — entering Vaikuntha, the spiritual world, to be with the Lord in an eternal relationship of love. Just as a parrot enters a tree not to dissolve into it but to enjoy its fruits, the devotee enters the Lord’s abode to enjoy an eternal relationship of divine love. By pure devotion, one can understand the Lord’s divine qualities and opulences in truth, and having understood, one enters His eternal abode.
