Commentary

This is one of the most radical and compassionate verses in the entire Bhagavad Gita. Krishna makes a statement that would have shocked the conventional moralists of any era: even a person of the worst conduct, if they worship Me with single-minded devotion, must be considered a saint.

Suduraachaara — The Worst Conduct

The word suduraachaara is emphatic. It does not mean someone with minor faults. It means a person of truly terrible behavior — someone whose life, by all outward standards, is a moral catastrophe. And yet Krishna says: even this person, if they turn to Me with undivided heart, is a saadhu. A saint.

Ananya-Bhaak — Undivided Devotion

The key condition is ananya-bhaak — devotion without division, without distraction, without mixing. The person has made a total inner decision: whatever else I may be, whatever my failings, I belong to God. This is not a casual or convenient devotion. It is a resolution of the deepest self.

Samyag Vyavasitah — Rightly Resolved

Krishna does not say the person’s bad conduct is acceptable. He says their resolution is right. They have made the correct fundamental decision. The conduct will follow — as the next verse (9.31) promises, such a person quickly becomes righteous. But the decision comes first, and that decision alone is enough to transform the identity of the person from sinner to saint.

The Theology of Transformation

This verse is not a license to sin. It is a promise of transformation. Devotion, when genuine and undivided, rewrites the trajectory of a life. The fire of sincere love for God burns away the accumulated debris of wrong action, not by ignoring it, but by creating a new center of gravity in the personality. When the heart is truly fixed on the Divine, the old patterns of destructive behavior lose their hold — not through suppression, but through replacement by something infinitely more compelling.
