Commentary

This verse closes Chapter 9, the chapter Krishna himself calls the “Royal Secret,” and it closes with one of the most direct and personal promises in all of scripture. Four simple instructions — fix your mind on Me, be My devotee, worship Me, bow to Me — followed by a guarantee: maam evaishyasi — you will certainly come to Me.

Notice the four-fold path compressed into one verse: manmanaa (mental — fix the mind), mad-bhakta (devotional — be My devotee), mad-yaajee (ritual — worship Me), namaskuru (physical — bow, surrender). This is not a complicated system. It is the complete path in four words.

The phrase mat-parayanah is beautiful: “one whose highest refuge is Me.” Para means beyond, ayana means movement or path. The devotee of this kind has chosen God as their ultimate destination — not health, not wealth, not reputation, not even spiritual attainment as such. The journey itself is an ever-deepening relationship with the Divine.

What makes this verse particularly moving is the personal tone. Krishna speaks as if directly to each of us: bhava — become. Present tense. Now. Not after years of preparation, not after you have purified yourself sufficiently, not after you have understood all the philosophy. Now, as you are, turn toward Me.

This same verse appears again almost word-for-word in Chapter 18 as one of the Gita’s final and most tender utterances — a sign that for Krishna, this is the heart of everything.

Key Insight

The entire path of devotion can be walked in four steps: think of God, love God, worship God, surrender to God. Begin today, as you are, and the promise is certain: you will come to Me.
