Commentary

This verse reveals one of the most intimate aspects of Krishna’s relationship with his devotees: he is not simply an object of worship but an active giver of wisdom. To those who turn to him with preeti — love, genuine affection — he gives the very understanding needed to reach him.

Satata-yuktaanaam — “constantly devoted.” Not the person who prays when things go wrong and forgets when they are comfortable. Not the one who is spiritual on festival days. But the one whose orientation toward the Divine is steady and continuous. This does not mean constant ritual — it means a continuous inner attunement, a baseline remembrance that runs beneath all the activities of life.

Buddhi-yogam dadaami — “I give the yoga of wisdom.” This is extraordinary. The path to God is not something you figure out entirely on your own through intellectual effort. For the sincere devotee, it is given. Grace is real. The guru, the insight at the right moment, the inner clarity that comes seemingly from nowhere — these are expressions of this giving.

The verse pairs beautifully with the next (10.11), where Krishna says he destroys the darkness of ignorance from within, with the shining lamp of knowledge. Together, these two verses describe a relationship of profound intimacy: the devotee turns toward God; God turns toward the devotee with the gift of light.

This is the great encouragement of bhakti: you are not alone in the work of understanding. When you bring sincere love and consistent practice, the understanding meets you from the other side.

Key Insight

Sincere, consistent devotion is met by God’s grace in the form of inner wisdom. The path to understanding is walked by both you and the Divine together.
