Commentary
This verse is the radiant companion to 10.10. In the previous verse, Krishna promised to give the intelligence (buddhi-yoga) by which devotees come to Him. Now He describes how He does it: from within the heart itself, He lights a lamp of knowledge that burns away the darkness of ignorance.
The image is extraordinarily powerful and personal. God is not distant, watching from far away. He is aatma-bhaavastho — situated within the very being of the devotee, within the heart. And from that intimate location, He performs the most compassionate act: He dispels the darkness that keeps the soul confused and suffering.
Ajnaanajam tamah — “the darkness born of ignorance.” This is not ordinary intellectual ignorance, like not knowing a fact. It is the fundamental confusion about the nature of the self, of God, and of the relationship between them. It is the root cause of all suffering in the material world. And Krishna, out of pure mercy (anukampa), destroys it.
The lamp metaphor is perfect. Darkness, no matter how ancient or deep, cannot resist even a small flame. The moment light appears, darkness vanishes. It does not need to be fought or negotiated with. Similarly, the knowledge that Krishna lights in the heart of His devotee does not need to overcome ignorance through struggle — it simply shines, and the darkness is gone.
The Light Within
You do not need to search for God somewhere far away. Krishna is already present within your heart, waiting to illuminate the truth. The price of this illumination is not scholarship or austerity — it is sincere, loving devotion.
