Commentary

This verse pairs justice with wisdom, governance with inner stillness. Among all means of suppressing lawlessness and maintaining social order, Krishna is danda — punishment. There are many methods of governance — diplomacy, persuasion, incentives — but when all else fails, it is the threat and application of punishment that maintains order. Without just punishment, society descends into chaos. The righteous ruler who punishes the wicked is performing a divine function.

Among those who seek victory, Krishna is neeti — morality, statesmanship, and ethical strategy. True victory is not won through brute force alone but through moral authority and wise conduct. In any field — war, politics, business, or personal life — the one who wins through righteous means wins permanently. Neeti is the art of combining wisdom with action.

Among secrets, Krishna is mauna — silence. This is profound. The greatest secret is not something spoken in whispers — it is silence itself. In spiritual practice, silence is the gateway to the deepest truths. What cannot be expressed in words, what lies beyond the reach of language, is best conveyed through silence. The deepest spiritual experiences, the most sacred mysteries, reside in the space where words end.

Among the wise, Krishna is jnaana — wisdom itself. Not the accumulation of facts, not mere book learning, but the living wisdom that perceives reality as it is, that distinguishes the eternal from the temporary, that sees the divine in all things. This is the knowledge of the knower — the ultimate understanding that everything is a manifestation of the one Supreme.
