Commentary

After describing the visual spectacle of the Universal Form, Arjuna now moves to theology — articulating what he understands from what he sees. This verse is one of the most theologically dense in the entire Gita, packed with titles and attributes that define the Supreme Being.

Tvam aksharam paramam veditavyam — “You are the supreme imperishable, the ultimate thing worth knowing.” The word akshara means that which never diminishes, never decays, never changes. And veditavyam means the ultimate goal of all knowledge — not one truth among many, but the truth that all other truths point toward.

Tvamasya vishvasya param nidhaanam — “You are the supreme resting place of this universe.” Every being, every planet, every galaxy ultimately rests upon the Supreme. He is the foundation, the support, the ground of all existence. Without Him, nothing would have a place to be.

Tvam avyayah shaashvata-dharma-goptaa — “You are the inexhaustible guardian of the eternal dharma.” This is not merely about religious rules. Shaashvata dharma — the eternal natural order, the cosmic law that sustains harmony across all planes of existence — is protected and maintained by the Supreme Person Himself.

The verse concludes with Arjuna’s personal declaration: sanaatanah tvam purushah mato me — “You are the eternal Supreme Person — this is my conviction.” The word mato me (my understanding) makes this personal. Arjuna is not quoting scripture; he is declaring his own direct realization, born from witnessing the Universal Form with his own divine eyes.
