Commentary

This verse provides a concise summary of how each of the three modes conditions the living entity. It serves as a practical diagnostic tool: by observing what predominates in one’s life — the pursuit of happiness, the drive for action, or the tendency toward confusion — one can identify which mode is most active.

The mode of goodness (sattva) binds through happiness. A saattvic person — whether a philosopher, scientist, or scholar — finds deep satisfaction in intellectual pursuits, in living a clean and well-ordered life. They are content with their understanding and feel no urgency to seek liberation. This very contentment becomes their chain. They may become repeated scholars and thinkers across many lifetimes, never transcending the material realm.

The mode of passion (rajas) binds through karma — fruitive activity. The raajasic person is never at rest. They are constantly planning, building, acquiring. Whether it is a business empire, a beautiful home, or social prestige, the person in passion is always working toward the next goal. They cannot sit still because their identity depends on their achievements.

The mode of ignorance (tamas) binds through pramaada — madness or delusion. Its primary weapon is covering knowledge (jnaanam aavritya). A taamasic person may have the capacity for understanding, but ignorance smothers it, like a thick blanket thrown over a lamp. The result is that they act against their own interests, pursue destructive habits, and waste their human life in sleep and confusion.

The practical lesson is that one should strive to cultivate goodness as a foundation, then use that elevated platform to transcend all three modes through devotion to the Supreme Lord.
