Commentary

With this verse, Krishna signals a transition. The divine qualities have been described — now he will explain the demonic nature in greater detail. The structure is deliberate: the Gita spent three verses on divine qualities but will spend many more on the demonic, because recognizing darkness requires more elaboration than recognizing light.

The word bhootasargau — “two types of created beings” — is significant. Krishna is not saying there are two biological species of humans. He is describing two orientations of consciousness, two fundamental approaches to life. Every person carries the seeds of both within them, and the question is which seeds are being watered.

The divine being follows the path laid down by scripture and tradition — not out of blind obedience, but out of understanding that these paths have been tested by millennia of seekers. The demonic being follows only personal desire, recognizing no authority beyond the self.

Krishna asks Arjuna to listen — shrinu — because what follows is not pleasant to hear, yet it is essential knowledge. Understanding the characteristics of the demonic nature is not about judging others; it is about recognizing tendencies within ourselves that lead away from truth. Self-awareness is the first step toward transformation.
