Commentary
This verse presents both a magnificent promise and a stark warning. The promise: if you are conscious of Krishna, you will cross over all the difficulties of conditioned life by His grace. The warning: if false ego prevents you from hearing and following, you will be destroyed.
The person who is fully in Krishna consciousness need never worry about the troubles of existence. A fool may not understand how a person in full Krishna consciousness can overcome all difficulties, but that is the reality. A person who acts in Krishna consciousness becomes a close friend of the Lord. The Lord always looks after the welfare of His friends, and those whose friendship pleases Him — He gives them spiritual guidance to please them, twenty-four hours a day.
The contrast is devastating. Ahankaarat — out of false ego — if Arjuna (or anyone) refuses to listen to Krishna’s instruction, thinking themselves independent and self-sufficient, the result is vinankshyasi — destruction. Not punishment from an angry God, but the natural consequence of delusion. A person who is not in Krishna consciousness acts under the control of material nature’s strict laws. They imagine themselves free, independent, master of their destiny — but this is the very illusion (maya) that keeps them bound.
The false ego is the last trap of maya. Even after understanding much philosophy, a person may think: “I will decide what is right based on my own judgment.” Krishna warns against precisely this attitude. True wisdom is recognizing that the Supreme Lord’s guidance — received directly or through scripture and the authentic teacher — is more reliable than one’s own ego-driven assessment. Surrender to that guidance is the path to freedom; resistance to it is the path to ruin.
