Commentary
In this verse, Krishna gives one of His most direct instructions for daily spiritual practice. It is not an abstract philosophical statement but a practical command: make Me the center of your consciousness at all times.
Chetasaa sarva-karmaani mayi sannyasya — with full awareness, dedicate all your activities to Me. When a person operates in Krishna consciousness, they do not work as the owner of the world but as a servant carrying out the Lord’s will. The servant does not act independently. They follow the master’s direction, and the results — whether gain or loss — do not disturb them, because the responsibility belongs to the master.
Mat-parah is a crucial word here. It means having no other objective except pleasing Krishna. Life is not lived for personal enjoyment, social status, or material accumulation. The single aim is to serve and please the Lord in everything one does.
Buddhi-yogam upaashritya — taking shelter of devotional intelligence. This is the yoga of the intellect directed toward God. One may argue that since Arjuna was personally directed by Krishna, he could follow these instructions, but how can anyone today follow them without Krishna’s physical presence? The answer is that Krishna’s instructions live in scripture, and they are transmitted through the authentic spiritual teacher. If one works according to Krishna’s teachings and the guidance of His representative, the result will be the same.
Mach-chittah satatam bhava — be always conscious of Me. This is the ultimate instruction: think of Krishna twenty-four hours a day. Arrange your life so that the thought of Krishna is never far from your mind. This is the complete, practical essence of Krishna consciousness.
