Commentary

Commentary

Krishna now traces the genealogy of all creation back to Himself. The seven great sages (sapta rishis) — Bhrigu, Marichi, Atri, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, and Vasishtha — are the cosmic architects of dharma and knowledge. The four Kumaras (Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana, and Sanatkumara) preceded them. And the Manus are the progenitors from whom human civilization descends.

All of these exalted beings, Krishna says, were born from His mind (maanasa jaataa). They did not arise by accident or through impersonal forces. They emerged from the conscious will of the Supreme. And from these beings, all the populations of the various planets — the entire cosmic family tree — descended.

This verse serves an important purpose in the chapter’s argument. Krishna has just listed all the qualities of living beings as coming from Him (verses 4-5). Now He shows the mechanism: He created the progenitors, who then populated the universe. The chain of creation flows from God through the great sages and Manus to every living being.

For the devotee, this is not merely cosmological information. It is a reminder that every living being shares a common divine origin. The person sitting next to you, the animal in the field, the sage in meditation — all trace back through the same lineage to the one Supreme Source.

The Cosmic Family

Understanding this divine genealogy helps us see all living beings as part of one cosmic family, with Krishna as the ultimate origin. This awareness naturally gives rise to respect, compassion, and a sense of spiritual kinship with all of creation.
