Commentary

This is one of the most important verses in the entire Bhagavad Gita. Krishna makes a clear, unambiguous declaration: “I am the source of everything — both spiritual and material. Everything emanates from Me.” And He adds that the wise, knowing this, worship Him with full emotional engagement.

The word prabhava means the source or origin of generation. Mattah sarvam pravartate — from Me, everything proceeds. This is not a partial claim. It covers all of existence: every atom, every galaxy, every thought, every emotion, every law of nature, and every scripture. All of it flows from Krishna like light from the sun.

The response of the budhaa (wise ones) is significant. They do not merely acknowledge this fact intellectually. They bhajante — they serve and worship — with bhaava-samanvitaah — full emotional devotion. The word bhaava here means deep spiritual emotion, the stirring of the heart. True wisdom is not cold and detached; it ignites love.

All Vedic literature confirms this truth. The Vedanta Sutra begins with athato brahma jijnasa — “now inquire into the Absolute Truth.” And through that inquiry, one arrives at the Supreme Person from whom everything emanates. The wise person who reaches this conclusion does not stop at philosophy — they enter into a loving relationship with that Supreme Source.

The Meeting of Knowledge and Love

The truly wise person is not the one who merely accumulates knowledge about God, but the one whose knowledge awakens genuine love and devotion. Wisdom without devotion is incomplete; devotion informed by wisdom is the perfection of spiritual life.
