Commentary

In this verse, Arjuna piles title upon title in an effort to express the inexpressible majesty of what he is witnessing. Each epithet reveals another dimension of Krishna’s supreme nature. He is aadi-devah — the original Lord, the first cause from which all other divine beings emerge. He is purushah puraanah — the eternal Person, the most ancient of all, existing before time itself.

The phrase param nidhaanam is particularly beautiful — Krishna is the supreme resting place, the ultimate sanctuary of the entire universe. Every being, every particle, every force of nature ultimately rests upon Him. This echoes the teaching from Chapter 9, where Krishna declares that all beings rest in Him as the mighty wind rests in infinite space.

Arjuna then identifies Krishna as both the knower (vettaa) and the knowable (vedyam). He is the consciousness that perceives and the reality that is perceived. He is the subject and the object of all knowledge simultaneously. He is also param dhaama — the supreme abode, the ultimate destination to which all spiritual seekers aspire.

The verse concludes with the declaration that the entire universe is pervaded (tatam) by Krishna. Not a single atom exists outside His presence. This is the Vedantic understanding of divine omnipresence — not that God is somewhere far away watching creation, but that He constitutes the very fabric of existence itself, sustaining every moment, every space, every being through His infinite form.
