Commentary
Commentary
Krishna continues his compassionate descent through levels of practice. If you cannot fix your mind on Me (verse 8), try regular practice (verse 9). If even regular practice is too difficult, then simply work for Me (verse 10). This is the third step, and it opens the door of bhakti to virtually everyone.
Mat-Karma-Paramah — Devoted to Work for Me
Mat-karma-paramah means “one for whom work for Me is the highest.” This does not require meditation, mantra, or formal spiritual practice. It means dedicating your ordinary work — your profession, your household duties, your service in the community — to God. The farmer who grows food thinking “this is for Krishna’s creation,” the teacher who teaches thinking “I serve the divine in these children,” the builder who builds thinking “this structure will serve God’s people” — all of them are mat-karma-paramah.
The Widest Door
This teaching is revolutionary in its accessibility. Many spiritual paths demand withdrawal from the world, mastery of the mind, or esoteric knowledge. Krishna here says: if you cannot do any of that, just work. Work for Me. Offer your labor, your skills, your effort to the Divine. And through that offering, siddhim avaapsyasi — you will attain perfection.
Siddhi Through Service
The perfection (siddhi) attained through working for God is not a lesser perfection. It is the same destination reached by different means. The Gita consistently teaches that the attitude behind action matters more than the form of the action. A sweeper who sweeps the temple floor with devotion is closer to God than a scholar who studies scripture with ego.
