Commentary

Commentary

The demonic monologue reaches its conclusion with claims of superiority and false generosity. “I am wealthy, I am well-born — who is equal to me?” The ego measures itself against others and always finds itself on top. This is not confidence but delusion — ajnana-vimohitah, intoxicated by ignorance.

The most subtle part of this verse is the demonic person’s claim to religious activity: “I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give charity, I shall rejoice.” Even sacred acts are co-opted by the ego. The sacrifices they perform are not for God but for show. The charity they give is not from compassion but for reputation. The rejoicing is not spiritual joy but the pleasure of being seen as generous and pious.

This is dambha — hypocrisy — in its most refined form. The demonic person has learned to use the language of spirituality, the gestures of devotion, the appearance of virtue, all while the inner motivation remains entirely selfish. They may build temples, fund festivals, and feed the poor — but the purpose is self-aggrandizement, not service.

Krishna closes the passage with the phrase ajnana-vimohitah — “deluded by ignorance.” This is the key: the demonic person is not evil by nature. They are lost in ignorance. They do not know who they truly are, and so they construct a false self out of wealth, power, and prestige, defending it fiercely against anyone who threatens it. The cure is not punishment but knowledge — the knowledge that the Gita itself offers.
