Commentary

Commentary

This verse exposes the religious hypocrisy of the demonic nature. Even when they engage in outwardly religious activities, the spirit is entirely wrong. They perform sacrifices naama-yajnaih — in name only. The form is there but the substance is absent.

Atma-sambhavitah — they consider themselves the greatest. Stabdhah — they are stubborn, rigid, unwilling to listen or learn. Dhana-mana-mada-anvitah — intoxicated by wealth, honor, and pride. This intoxication creates a spiritual blindness that makes genuine worship impossible, because genuine worship requires humility — the recognition that there is something greater than oneself.

Dambhena — with hypocrisy. Their religious activities are performances designed to impress others. They may build grand temples, sponsor elaborate rituals, or make large donations, but the motivation is self-glorification, not devotion. Avidhi-poorvakam — without following the prescribed rules. They pick and choose from tradition what suits them, ignoring whatever demands genuine self-transformation.

The Gita is clear: it is not the external form of worship that matters but the internal attitude. A simple offering made with sincere devotion is worth more than the most elaborate ceremony performed from pride. Krishna himself says in Chapter 9 that even a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water offered with love is accepted. The demonic person offers gold and pomp but withholds the one thing that makes an offering sacred: a humble heart.
