Commentary

Commentary

This verse reaches the deepest level of the demonic nature: active hostility toward God. The progression has been building: first ignorance of right and wrong (v.7), then denial of God’s existence (v.8), then self-glorification (v.14), then false religiosity (v.17), and now open enmity toward the divine.

Ahankaram balam darpam kamam krodham cha samshritah — they take shelter of ego, force, arrogance, desire, and anger. These are their gods, their refuge, the things they trust in. Where a devotee takes shelter of God, the demonic person takes shelter of the ego.

Maam atma-para-dehesu pradvishantah — they despise Me, who dwells in their own body and in the bodies of others. This is a profound statement. Krishna, as the Supreme Lord, resides as the Supersoul (Paramatma) within every living being. To hate God is therefore to hate the deepest reality of one’s own self and of every other person. It is the ultimate self-destruction.

Abhyasooyakah — they are envious. Envy of God is the root of the demonic nature. The demonic person cannot tolerate the idea that there is someone greater, someone whose authority supersedes their own will. They would rather live in a godless universe where they are supreme than accept a meaningful universe where they are not the center.

This verse explains why the demonic person, despite having everything material, cannot find peace. They are at war with the deepest reality of existence — the divine presence within themselves and all beings.
