Commentary

Commentary

This verse continues the description of karmic consequences, adding a note of deepening severity. Janmani janmani — birth after birth — the cycle repeats. Each demonic birth reinforces the tendencies that caused it, creating a downward spiral that becomes increasingly difficult to escape.

Maam aprapya — “without reaching Me.” This is perhaps the saddest phrase in the verse. The purpose of human life, according to the Gita, is to realize one’s relationship with the divine. The demonic person, trapped in ego and hatred, never even approaches this possibility. They remain perpetually distant from the one source of genuine happiness and liberation.

Tato yanti adhamam gatim — “they go to the lowest destination.” The trajectory is downward. Without the corrective influence of spiritual knowledge, devotion, or even basic moral sense, the soul descends further and further from its true nature.

Yet even here, the Gita does not close the door completely. The very fact that Krishna is explaining this process to Arjuna implies that understanding it can change one’s course. Awareness of the danger is the first step toward avoiding it. The person who hears this teaching and resolves to cultivate divine qualities has already begun to reverse the downward trend. The Gita’s message is always ultimately one of hope — not blind optimism, but the earned hope that comes from right understanding and sincere practice.
