Commentary
Commentary
After three verses describing the twenty-six divine qualities, Krishna now turns to the other side of the coin: the asuri sampat — the demonic endowment. The contrast is stark and deliberate. Where the divine qualities were numerous and nuanced, the demonic qualities are listed in just six words, as though darkness requires less description.
Dambha — hypocrisy, pretending to be what one is not. This is the first quality listed because it is the foundation of the demonic character. When a person creates a false front of religiosity or virtue while harboring selfish motives, the entire spiritual project is undermined. Darpa — arrogance, the puffed-up pride that comes from material success. Abhimana — conceit, an inflated sense of one’s own importance.
Krodha — anger, not the momentary flash that arises and passes, but the deep-seated, burning resentment that distorts judgment and leads to destructive action. Paarushya — harshness, cruelty in speech and behavior toward others. And finally ajnaana — ignorance, not mere lack of information, but the willful refusal to see reality as it is.
Krishna reassures Arjuna — “O Partha, do not grieve, for you are born with divine qualities.” The purpose of this chapter is not to condemn but to illuminate. By knowing the markers of both natures, a seeker can honestly examine themselves and choose the path of growth.
