Commentary

Commentary

Krishna begins the detailed description of the demonic nature. The first mark is a fundamental confusion about what should and should not be done — pravritti and nivritti. The person of demonic nature has lost the moral compass that distinguishes right action from wrong action.

This is not about ignorance of rules. Every society has norms of conduct. The demonic person may know these norms intellectually but does not internalize them. There is no inner sense of “I should do this” or “I must refrain from that.” Desire alone drives action — whatever I want, I do; whatever obstructs me, I oppose.

Three things are said to be absent: shaucham — purity, both external cleanliness and inner clarity of intention. Aachara — proper conduct, the behavioral codes that make civilized society possible. And satyam — truth, not just in speech but in one’s entire relationship with reality.

The absence of truth is particularly significant. When a person loses the habit of truthfulness, they lose the ability to see clearly. Self-deception becomes habitual. They construct narratives that justify every desire and every action, no matter how destructive. This internal dishonesty is the root from which all other demonic qualities grow.
