Commentary

Commentary

With this verse, Krishna introduces one of the most practical sections of the Gita. Having established that faith operates in three modes, He now shows that these modes permeate every aspect of daily life — starting with the food we eat, and extending to how we worship (yajna), how we practice discipline (tapas), and how we give (daana).

The food that each person prefers is itself shaped by the gunas. This is an extraordinarily practical insight — one can diagnose one’s dominant guna simply by observing one’s food preferences. Those who understand which guna governs their choices can make wise adjustments. Those who realize that food, sacrifice, charity, and all other practices differ according to the modes are truly intelligent.

There are propagators who say that a person can do whatever they want and achieve perfection. But such teachers are foolish and misleading. They create their own methods without following scriptural direction, and the general public remains confused.

Krishna says shrinu — “hear” — once again, emphasizing that what follows is important practical wisdom. The next several verses will systematically categorize food (verses 8-10), sacrifice (verses 11-13), austerity (verses 14-19), and charity (verses 20-22) according to the three modes, giving the sincere seeker a comprehensive map for self-evaluation and spiritual growth.
