Commentary

Commentary

Krishna now transitions to describing the highest attainment — how a person who has perfected their duties reaches the state of Brahman realization. He tells Arjuna that He will explain this in summary (samaasena), indicating that what follows is a concentrated teaching of the highest knowledge.

The word nishthaa means the culminating stage or firm establishment. Krishna is describing the final destination of the spiritual journey — jnaanasya yaa paraa — the supreme stage of knowledge. This is not merely intellectual knowledge but the direct realization of one’s identity as spirit and one’s relationship with the Supreme.

Krishna explains to Arjuna that a person can reach the supreme state of perfection (siddhi) by dedicating their occupational work to the service of the Lord. If one performs their work for the satisfaction of the Supreme and renounces the fruits to God, they attain the supreme state of Brahman — the highest knowledge.

The true purpose of knowledge is not academic understanding but the practical realization of Brahman. The actual attainment of this knowledge — the siddhi — comes through pure devotion to Krishna. This is described in the verses that follow, where Krishna will outline the qualities and practices that lead to this supreme realization. The description of how one attains siddhi through pure Krishna consciousness is the culmination of all the Gita’s teachings.
