Krishna now reveals the weight of His reason for acting despite having no personal need to do so: mama vartmaanuvartante manushyaah paartha sarvashah — human beings follow My path in every respect, O Partha. The leader’s example is not neutral. When the most revered and powerful person in creation acts, the whole world watches and imitates. If Krishna were to cease diligent action, the entire human world would take that as permission to do the same.

The word atandritah — without lethargy, carefully, diligently — is worth dwelling on. It is not enough to merely go through the motions of duty. Krishna says He performs His duties atandritah — with full attention and care. Even the Divine does not give half-hearted effort. This is the standard being set for Arjuna.

The teaching about the power of example is one that resonates across every domain of human life. A parent who models hard work, honesty, and compassion shapes children far more powerfully than any instruction. A leader whose conduct is sloppy gives permission for sloppiness throughout an entire organization. A teacher who reads shapes readers; a teacher who watches screens shapes screen-watchers. We teach most powerfully by what we do, not what we say.

Krishna is making this point at the cosmic level: even the actions of the Divine shape the trajectory of creation. And by extension: even your actions, Arjuna — especially your actions, as a leader and warrior — shape the society that observes you.

Historical Context

The concept of the king or leader as a model for society was deeply embedded in Vedic and later Hindu political thought. The Arthashastra of Kautilya and the Manusmriti both emphasize that the conduct of rulers sets the standard for subjects. Krishna here elevates this principle to a theological level: even the Divine participates in the world as a model for humanity, not out of obligation but out of care.
