Commentary

Commentary

This verse is startling in its honesty. Krishna declares that He is the gambling among all fraudulent activities. This does not mean God endorses cheating — it means that even in deception, the supreme element of cleverness and strategy is a reflection of divine intelligence. Gambling is the most cunning among all forms of fraud, requiring the highest skill in manipulation. Krishna’s point is that wherever there is supreme excellence, even in morally questionable domains, His energy is present.

He is the splendor of those who are splendid — the very quality that makes brilliant people shine. When you see someone whose presence lights up a room, whose talent or charisma is undeniable, that radiance is a spark of Krishna’s own tejas.

Jayo’smi — “I am victory.” In every contest, every struggle, every battle where someone prevails, that triumph is Krishna’s manifestation. Vyavasaayo’smi — “I am adventure” or “I am determination.” The courage to undertake difficult enterprises, the resolve to see them through, the daring spirit that takes on what others will not — this too is divine.

Sattvam sattvavataam — “I am the strength of the strong.” Not merely physical strength but the essential quality of goodness and power that makes a strong person strong. This verse shows that Krishna’s manifestations are not limited to the conventionally sacred. He pervades all of life — the victories of the battlefield, the daring of adventurers, the brilliance of the gifted, and yes, even the cunning of the clever.
