Commentary

Commentary

After presenting the differing opinions of various thinkers, Krishna now steps in with His own definitive judgment. He addresses Arjuna with two powerful epithets — Bharata-sattama (best of the Bharatas) and Purusha-vyaghra (tiger among men) — both conveying respect and encouragement. The message is clear: “Stop listening to conflicting opinions. Hear My verdict.”

Krishna declares that renunciation is of three types. This classification follows the pattern He has used throughout the Gita — dividing aspects of human experience according to the three gunas: sattva (goodness), rajas (passion), and tamas (ignorance). Just as knowledge, action, happiness, food, and worship have been classified by the three gunas, so too is renunciation.

Although various thinkers have different opinions, the Supreme Lord — who is the original source of all Vedic knowledge — is giving His own authoritative conclusion. Since all the Vedas were originally spoken by God Himself, His verdict should be taken as final.

This verse serves as a transition point. Krishna will now explain what sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic renunciation look like in practice, giving Arjuna (and every seeker) a clear framework for understanding how to renounce properly.
